For Francis, the first person I know who write a thesis on this novel.
Pablo Julio, a Uruguayan friend, humanist vet warned me that my countryman Feijoo, back in the eighteenth century, presented a picture of Alexander tired than the heroic portrait that I reflected on these posts.
I think it's inspiring to hang on the blog a few paragraphs of this unorthodox vision of the King of Macedonia: Galician painting, and illustrated a Spaniard Alejandro à rebours.

learned and curious Letters Letter XXIX
Parallel Charles XII, King of Sweden , Alexander the Great
1. Sir, The admiration with which Sir. received word that he gave N. that I preferred, in line hero, Carlos, King of Sweden, the twelfth of that name, Alexander the Great, I am the subject of another wonder. Diceman VMD. that having read the life of that unfortunate Prince, written, as given by the way, Mr. Voltaire, and Alexander by Quintus Curtius, finds no basis for the preference I give the former than the latter. This I admire, because in these writings see little reason for the expressed preference, and because I am now quite empty, it will present to the VMD. to make further reflection on them, that he did here. [230]
2. I suppose, that here not talking about a perfect Heroism, which is the collection of all the virtues possessed sublime degree, but not a heroism so imperfect, it is reduced to a single virtue, whatever it may be. Dirase with truth, say, a man of great value has a heroic courage, but why can not quite call Hero. Military virtues, courage, skill, and prudence, placed in an eminent degree, are earning a reputation as heroes in the common acceptance. The value alone is not enough, before a wise behavior unassisted and is not courage, but courage and fearlessness. But even these virtues, without the company of others, constitute a very tiny Heroism. Do not ask, that the hero is a saint, because the world does not give this meaning to that voice, but it seems that justice can be, at least, require the Hero, which is lenient, liberal, and observant of his word ( ...).
17. But just as, if adversity, who suffered Carlos, have fallen about Alexander, he had been reduced to a state rather miserable: if Charles had had the fortune of Alexander, is very likely to have done far more famous than him. (...) But the strongest proof that Carlos, with the same fortune that Alexander had become more famous, is taken from the evidence that we are taking, that in the complex of the virtues of a Conquistador exceeded Hero of Sweden to Macedonia.
18. The clemency was one of those, in which more than one could see the excess. It is true that Carlos is not always practiced virtue. Worked against her, and with trivial rigor in execution of General Patkul. But in the end, only one vez, y sólo con un hombre fue riguroso, y aun concederé, que cruel. Dígalo la horrenda matanza de toda la Nación, or stock of the gills, which was run in cold blood. Say their barbarism with Prince Arimaces Sogdian, and all the noblest of those people, who having, after little resistance down the mountain to give up and beaten, all was crucified. I omit cases less noticeable.
19. Even greater than the clemency was the advantage, which made Charles Alexander in continence. It was, in truth, Alexander of the Prince more disordered in the chapter on lust. But he was far from the continent. Plutarch says that outside of marriage, did not touch any woman, but Bársena. He must have forgotten Plutarch of the Thai prostitute, who fell Curcio, and the mistress Campaspe, who speak Pliny, Aelian, and others. Curcio also introduced into the bed of Alexander to Thalestris, Queen of the Amazons. But John le Clerc, in his criticism of Quintus Curtius, to notice this great foundation of fable. His circumspection, for the beautiful wife of Darius, is laudable. But his detestable trade with Bagoas Eunuch, who blunders on the bed caused him to commit some very serious conduct, not for admission to the imagination Alejandro without horror.
20. On the contrary, is not in Prince Stories cleaner for this part to Carlos. Never noticed in him the slightest defect, or work, or most scrupulous word against pudicity, it is noteworthy that a man who spent his entire life without marriage (...).

21. Having been so superior Carlos Alejandro in continence, it was much more in temperance. In this area there is no parallel between the two, the two very opposite ends, one of temperance, another distemper. Carlos very frugal, very greedy Alejandro. Carlos did not use otherwise never drink water: Alexander was with great vinous excess, going far beyond the amount of wine that could stand, or his stomach or his head. Thus, it was frequent drunkenness. Ateneo, citing Cardiano Eumenes, and Diodorus of Eritrea [242], states that there was such a drunk that made him sleep for two continuous days and nights. (...)
28. I completed my Lord, the comparison of the two Heroes, which I bring to VMD. my opinion, the advantage is on the side of Alejandro del Norte. The name given to Carlos Nations unanimous Twelfth, King of Sweden as Margarita de Valdemar, Queen also of Sweden, called the Semiramis of the North. And I am the two conformity, that possesses the virtues of Alexander of Greece, and Semiramis of Assyria, lacked the services of this heroine, and of the hero. I am at all times of VMD., & C.
