The role of race in the dog's behavior
A breed is a group of dogs that have similar characteristics in their behavior and appearance, obtained after selective breeding over a long period of time. This selection was sought to get copies of which features were useful to humans and aesthetic appeal. There are over 400 recognized breeds, which have set a standard that defines all the morphological and behavioral characteristics, and serves as a benchmark for assessing the purity within each individual race.
That a particular dog is purebred does not guarantee that adult behavior is true to standard only gives us a chance it is, as are the experiences that have the dog for his life and education will receive the greatest weight in characterizing his behavior as an adult. As for the mestizos, being mixtures of different races the characteristics of their behavior are unknown.
The main areas in which race influences the behavior of the dog include emotional stability, relationship with children and other family members, dominance, easy to train him and his need for activity, among others. Each of these factors is present in varying degrees in each race, for example a Pastor English is a very active dog, while a German Shorthaired Pointer is the opposite.
In theory, individuals belonging to a particular race should have all the same features of behavior, but in practice there are variations. Within a single litter each puppy will have a feature that will make you different from his brothers. For example, there may be a very dominant and yet one of his brothers to be very submissive. The only way to be sure of the disposition of each puppy is with the help of an expert.
Behaviorally, there is no breed of dog that may be predisposed to develop conduct disorder or aggression as are caused by irresponsible education.
In short, race may be considered a guide to help choosing a puppy, but it depends on the behavior of their respective owners finally have an adult.

Signals our dogs canine
So far I have always talked about how to interpret the language of our dogs and know what we mean, but the communication need not be unidirectional. Really convey enough information for our dogs they try to understand.
first thing we think when we try to communicate something to our dogs is to use the word . With a trained dog use a series of verbal orders as "sit" or "down" to get it to do something, like sitting or lying down. But when you talk without ordering something we are also transmitting information that includes, not the words we use, but the tone of voice, that let you know if we are angry, happy, sad, congratulations ...
voice also have the option to experiment with our dog other form of communication signals based body, the same they use to communicate. Let's see what we can try:

- Giving back: we can use to calm down, for example when nervous or stressed to climb over us to stop. The latter at least with my Dobermann not too effect ...
- Move slowly: other form of reassurance, we can move slowly if we see who walks fast to lower the rate. Yawning
- : used when the dog is scared or worried, for reassurance, so we can use it to calm him down. With my adult dogs have not observed any effect to it, but as a puppy after a few yawns was finished sleeping.
- squint: when we come to know a dog that is a good way to calm him down because if we stand and look at from above, you will feel more relaxed when our eyes seem smaller. Turn
- head the way for a dog to approach without scaring is another indirect way, drawing a small curve, rather than directly, which would turn his head to calm him down. It is equally applicable in humans, use this signal if we move directly or we bow with him. Although not directly usable by humans, explains the behavior of the dog in a rapprochement.

continue with the series of posts on communication in dogs, this time it's up to the ears, taking into account that not all have the same type . Thus we have races like the Husky that have erect ears are highly mobile, and other ear drops as the German Shorthaired Pointer where the movements are more subtle. Dogs with cropped ears are a special case, mobility should not be affected if the cut is done correctly, is in some cases, such as the Doberman that has fallen, a good cut would give greater expression. However, certain types of cuts, or cuts flush, I removed the dog any opportunity to communicate with their ears.
The position of the ears indicates the attitude of the dog, sometimes coming together with some other signals in the head, tail or body position. Let's see what we can extract meaning:

- upright or slightly tilted forward show attention and vigilance. If you also tilts her head from side to side while looking something may denote or interest therein, or is something that does not understand. It is customary to observe these signals when you're talking about, but it is up to us if you would interpret what we say, or else they do not understand us at all. Fully
- leaning forward, teeth bared with wrinkled snout communicate his decision to attack.
- laid back: show fear. If teeth also teaches fear is accompanied by the intention to attack in case of attack.
- Backward, close to the head: and low tail indicates submission.
- On the move: the dog puts his ears in a sequence of characteristic positions, which always begins casting ears slightly forward. Then as the dog, you can throw them back slightly to end up lowering them or place them in either one of these two positions. Dog shows a peaceful and indecisive that simply aims to highlight in submissive attitude.

Acronyms that appear in the title of this post from "Breed Specific Legislation , or Castilian " breed specific legislation ". They are basically a set of regulations on the owners of certain breeds of dogs deemed "dangerous" to be found in the laws of countries like the U.S., Canada, Italy, Switzerland, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. Is a little-known in Spain, but beyond our borders there is a strong anti-BSL movement. In our country there is potentially dangerous dog law (PPP) also affects a number of races, but does not (yet) to the hardness of the BSL.
owners breeds included in the BSL are subject to a number of obligations that depending on the application area could be: take the dog muzzled in public, hire a civil liability insurance, keep in owner's property without the possibility of going outside or even inside a kennel. In some places reaches a total ban possession of dogs of breeds affected, leading to transfer or killed. In the blacklist races of BSL can find Rottweilers, Dobermans, Chow-Chow, Husky, Boxer, Presa Canario, American Pit Bull Terrier or Cane Corso, among others.
Such laws are born in response to public alarm created by cases of dog attacks on humans, usually caused by media that publish this kind of news without investigating the case correctly and completely ignoring behavior of the canine species. Obviously the cases that come to light, the most serious, are featuring dogs for their great size can inflict more damage, coincidentally the races that includes BSL. The numerous attacks that smaller dogs and socially accepted, such as the Cocker or Yorkshire, will not be published ever since the damage they can inflict is much smaller. This will end up demonizing a series of races for the conduct of a very small number of its members, behavior that in most cases the dog is not directly responsible.
Against the BSL is wielded various arguments, but personally I think these laws are designed wrong from the start, being based on something like the breed that have minimal influence on the behavior of the adult dog actually being environmental factors that influence the most. By environmental factors, we understand the environment in which the dog has grown, the treatment received and their training, among others. Because of this, about what is actually being legislated on a characteristic of the animal (breed) that has no relation to the damage to society to be avoided, which removed the rest of the law.
The vast majority of dog attacks have the main responsibility the owner, who with the treatment and training (environmental factors) that has given the animal has done to develop this unstable behavior. The aspect of training refers not only to owners who have done the wrong way by not having enough knowledge, but also to those unaware that they have intentionally obtained an aggressive dog. It is these irresponsible owners to whom the law should prosecute and convict, and not just the acts of his dog, but also for having brought about a problem behavior.
But in many attacks the victim is not free of guilt, having caused the aggressive reaction of the dog by not knowing how to relate to it. From the time humans we accept and live with dogs are required to know a minimum about his behavior, but if too many parents allow their children to see dogs as toys that can do what you want, then something is wrong with our society.

Kates Playground Zip Files
Due to time constraints I was unable to post much lately, so i load to talk about an issue that has long been interested and I met for six. It is the strengthening of food link, a methodology aimed the establishment of a proper hierarchical relationship between us and our dog, and I met through an interesting article linked Amalio Lasheras to find the end of this post.
already commented earlier in the family dog and human the importance of establishing a correct hierarchy between humans and dogs to avoid conflicts. In this article I link we have two possible ways in which our dog we can consider:
- As a member of its species this implies that we can fight for the leadership of the herd may develop a disorder of dominance aggression .
- As a member of another species ie sees us as humans and not like dogs. This avoids conflict by not being aggressive the hierarchical relationship between the two species.
The methodology we propose is aimed at the dog to see their human masters and leaders of the pack occupying the post of Super-Alpha , a kind of matriarch of the pack leadership exercised without the animal has the need to fight him to take the lead. This is the point that I liked the article, since this type of relationship is not artificial or roles assigned to dogs or to humans: each one is who he is and everyone is aware of who is the other.
the dog to learn to regard their masters as Super-Alfas should extend the type of relationship between animals and their mothers during lactation. In this period the puppy is dependent and subordinate to her mother and naturally ends with weaning. Stronger links with food get that this period is completed and extends throughout the life of the dog, taking the masters the role of the mother.
To teach the dog's owners have to follow some guidelines when feeding to see them as food providers with which they must strive to obtain it. This includes, among other things, being able to remove and without an aggressive response from the dog. It started a month, when the puppy begins to take solid foods, and continue to the owner when the animal comes into your new home.
recommend reading the original article where this method appears much more extensive and detailed, since my intention here is simply to make a short summary. I must say that before I met him and we had already brought our dogs and so far there has been no hierarchical conflict, although they can not tell me how exactly we believe. Recommended Links

To speak of dog training I must first say what it is. I have read several different definitions, there appears to be a common understanding to describe this discipline, but I think the best fit is that of Rodrigo Trigosso of Dog, which considers:
The training dogs is the process by which a person achieves a dog to learn and acquire skills in something and keep that skill.
this in mind, issues that I have spoken and the socializing of the puppy and the family dog and human have a training component. In the stage of socialization we are making our puppy acquire skills related to social behavior, which accompanied him throughout his life the same way that when you educate them to interact properly with their human family we are also training them in some way. With these two examples we can see the importance of training our dog to be seamlessly integrated into our society.
Although I have often joked that our educated Wolf Hess as a puppy, training itself has to do a person, much as there are things you learn one or other dogs. This training process is not only to get the dog to learn a skill, but should be trained to maintain and do not forget learned. Areas
training
When we train our dog we always imagine him running through a circuit, learning to locate drugs or attacking a thief to immobilize it. Nothing is further from reality, probably our dog does not need to learn any of those skills, but others are also part of one of the four areas of dog training:
- canine Education: it is the set of behaviors that will allow the dog to live in our society, showing what you can do and what not to do. Part of this area of socialization, to educate them to make their needs in designated areas or walking on a leash. Are basic things you should teach any dog.
- Basic Obedience: while in the previous section that teaches the dog you are behaviors, obedience is a series of exercises to do when asked, such as sit, lie or go to our call , among others. Improved communication between owner and dog and is also a type of training recommended to avoid disruption of nesting. Sports Training
- : is intended for participation in dog sports like agility and canine freestyle.
- Working Dogs: of the four areas is perhaps the most specialized training includes the dogs that made human functions: guide dogs for the blind, rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, etc.
To conclude this introduction, we will discuss the three training techniques used today. These methods to teach the dog that reinforcements are based on different types to get to learn different skills. Although applied here summarize the dog, most can be used and are used with other kinds of animals.
- Traditional Dog training: it is the oldest of the three, since it is based on the techniques used to train military dogs in the first world war. The medium of instruction are negative reinforcement and punishment. The s negative reinforcements are to strengthen the conduct that is intended to learn the dog to provoke an unpleasant situation if it can avoid running such conduct. Put another way, punishment is applied to the dog it will take off if it does what we want. The punishment are an unpleasant situation that provokes the dog if he does something he should not. Besides all this, are also used collars barbed, drowning and electric shock.
- Dog training positive: back to the traditional development, began to operate commercially in 1942, but began to have some spread to 90. It is based on positive reinforcement , consisting of rewarding desired behaviors to increase the interest of the dog in such behavior we want to learn. If however the dog has done something wrong, does not apply punishment, but he notes with a signal.
- Clicker Training: is a method developed in the 60 and little known even to the training of dogs, but perhaps is the best results can give us. It is based on a "clicker", which is nothing more than a little box "clicks." In a first step must be the dog to associate the sound of the clicker to something pleasant, such as food. Then each time the dog performs the behavior you want to teach, we click and reward, so learn it and perform frequently. It is then that before you make such conduct, we give the order and do the rest of the sequence.

Software to translate dog barks
sure we have all wanted some Once our dog we speak to understand without a doubt what we try to communicate by barking. Although this is quite complicated it becomes possible, if they may someday have a dog-human translator.
At the University of Budapest, in Hungary, a group of computer scientists has developed software that is still somewhat rudimentary form is able to understand the meaning of the barking dogs of the Hungarian Mudi breed also able to identify a particular dog by its bark. It's designed to identify six possible reactions of the dog has been a ball, is fighting, playing, facing a stranger, like hiking and being alone.
The percentage of positive identifications of the software on a sample of 6000 individual barking is 43%, just over 40% identifying a human. When identifying individual dogs from barking, the percentage of correct answers was 52%. Keep in mind that human we can not make this identification based on bark, except when it comes to our dogs (both I and my partner know which of our four dogs barking, and I think anyone with more than one dog are also capable).
can be observed that the project is still at a very early stage but very promising. You can find more information on the link at the bottom left of the post. Related

Aggressiveness by dominance
Now that we know a bit how it works canine hierarchy as are the relationships between dog and human family, let's take a look at the life of Jack, a German shepherd 2 years.
Jack came home surrounded by an atmosphere of joy when she was 3 months old. Since then forgot the whole family is a dog and was treated like a member of the family. He spent his life enjoying long walks around town pulling its owner, Tony, it cost too much effort to direct it, so I really was ridden by Tony Jack. He was the first to eat, so the table then supplementing your diet with what the family offered their dishes. Jack was not difficult to take control of the sofa, but he felt no interest in remote control bed and then Tony was his usual place to sleep. In his two years Jack was the one who decided when to leave and when to eat, and the whole family obeyed his orders. Never looked away any of its owners and sometimes it was difficult to move around the house because Jack was put forward and had to go around to pass.
What is happening at this point is that they have reversed roles, rather than the dog that obeys its masters, the masters are those who obey the dog, often not realizing this situation and Jack sometimes obeys them, but do it because you fancy. Attempts to correct this situation will usually be answered by grunts, Announcements be ignored that a bite can kill their masters. Jack has become the leader of the pack, and their masters his subordinates.
our dog's family may feel surprised at his behavior, coming to think even that is an ungrateful because I have always treated like a king. Nothing is further from reality, clearly the fault of the masters who have humanized, totally ignoring the social norms dog. Correcting this problem of dominance aggression involves a change of mentality and attitude of the masters.
Ideally, as always in these cases, see a specialist who can help us to treat the disorder of our dog, because even if the bat can think that the only solution is to put the animal, most cases can be solved. Physical punishment has always ruled out, we will only worsen the dog's reaction. Before starting treatment, the family has to understand what the rules of social conduct of the dog and take their share of fault in causing this situation.
To correct this behavior requires a training process which should involve all the family and under the supervision of a specialist. Add to that castration for males, and the use of drugs. Related
