Canine Aggression

The dog bite?, is a typical question that we can make someone in the street near our intention to pet dog, and showing one of the things we worry about this species is aggression. Although it is a natural behavior, from the moment that lives with us is no longer acceptable and something becomes a problem to be solved. Usually

news of dog attacks people quite often cause public alarm, stigmatize certain breeds are considered aggressive per se and no distinction is made the type of aggressiveness that carried the dogs, thinking that the only solution is to resign oneself to live with him and sacrificing or end. The reality however is not as extreme. It is true that there are breeds genetically prone to develop adult aggressive behavior, although we may be surprising to find among them some as the cocker, but this is not the only factor to consider. The character of a dog is given mostly by the education received and their experiences throughout his life, so it will be a true reflection of how it has shaped their owners regardless of race.

Moreover, if for whatever reason the dog develops a disorder aggressive we are not in a dead end, the search for a solution is to analyze the behavior of the animal so you know what's motivating. This is usually psychological causes, but a small percentage is a physical disease that produces aggression. In this way, we can summarize the following types:

  • Aggressiveness by dominance: the case of a dispute between two dogs for a resource (eg food) or to establish seniority. If you head towards their masters the intention is to ascend to the position of leader of the pack.
  • predatory aggressiveness: the instinct arises hunting dog to what he considered a dam. For "dam" means something that moves at a certain speed, such as a cat or other animal running away, a person running or a vehicle. This is why if a dog ran away he pursues us, even though their initial intention was not that.
  • aggression between males or between females : These are disputes between same-sex animals that live in the same house, usually for hierarchy.
  • Aggressiveness by pain: it is a perfectly normal reaction to external aggression, but should not occur if pain is produced by his master to heal a wound
  • fear aggression, fearful dogs appears to be unable to cope with new situations, usually when a stranger tries to touch and feel cornered with no room to flee.
  • maternal aggressiveness is manifested in females during the first month after birth in order to protect their young from other animals, depending on the attitude we adopt towards people of the relationship you have with them. It is entirely possible that their owners let them come and touch their puppies without suspicion, but may not be well if they are strangers.
  • territorial aggressiveness, is caused by the nature animal dog as territorial intruders when access to its territory is a person or another animal. Although a dog with this behavior is commonly considered a good guardian, if you have not received proper training should not be surprised if it attacks the visits, and yet we must bear in mind that in our absence, will not distinguish a thief of someone unknown coming into our house with a legitimate purpose.
  • Redirected Aggression: if it appears to be impossible to attack the dog who generates the negative stimulus, and instead attacks another more accessible. Aggressiveness
  • learned: it has induced in the dog through training by his master, obtaining a very unstable animal growls and attacks for no reason just to satisfy him. Dogs are difficult to treat, faithful reflections of masters problematic and unbalanced.
Finally, leave a couple of links to further information on this topic:

Why produce canine aggression?

's family dogs and humans

As I mentioned in a previous post , the hierarchy is the basis of canine society, and that society is composed not only dogs, but we are also included us humans. The little dog we have at home we considered the herd, so we are bound by its rules, but since we are not dogs is interesting to note a number of things:

  • A dog is a dog, and is happy of being : nap by noon on the field, pasture grass, digging holes or fetch a stick can be as suggestive activities for our dog as much as we do not interested. So the same way that he throws us for pick-up sticks and insists that dogs do activities, we should not pretend to behave like a human. I think for a good relationship between all this is a basic point, not humanize the dog.
  • commanded us: the role of the herd owners is to be the leaders, "alpha dogs." This means that we are responsible for the welfare of our canine friends who have food, water and a good place to sleep and take care of their health and that they lack love and attention. But it also means we control the resources, that is, decisions about when to eat or place to sleep, for example, are ours.
  • Respect hierarchy, closely related to the above, we must act as leaders to keep our range. We provide the things a good training for obedience, but also influences our daily behavior. Our dog may want to become alpha and help you eat first leaving or by feeding on the table, allowing you to sleep in our bed or leaving pasearnos to us when we left. Nor is it good if we growls to take food or a toy, and oddly enough if advocates for children is a sign that he believes that is hierarchically above them, as it defends the members of lower ranks. If you have multiple dogs should not get involved in their hierarchy clearly benefiting from the lower-level actions such as offering food or defend first of others. The fights can occur, but we limit ourselves to separate (and this should be done with care) without punishing them later. Nothing
  • punishment: to use violence with our dog not only demeans us as humans, but we also breaks down in the hierarchy of the pack and how much we can get us to obey out of fear. This is a large failure and we get two negative things: destabilize the dog's behavior and that the hierarchy is not too clear. Just a firm "no" and that captures our displeasure when he does something he should not, and especially positive reinforcement obedience to touch, kind words or a bauble, with that will increase their interest to please. Since we have touched on this issue, add that the punishment or reward should be applied immediately after the action we want to punish or reward. It is no use to give you a cookie when you take a while seated after saying "Sit!" Will not know exactly why they reward, whether by watching or stay up watching a fly that happens.
  • socialize our puppy, we talked about this stage puppy's life, so I just re-emphasize its importance. It extends between 4 and 12 weeks of his life and the goal is to familiarize you with the greatest number of people, objects and situations. Something that had not commented in the previous post is the possibility that this period of his life was spent in a kennel because it comes delivered with about 3 months. In this case before we bring him home to inform us of the conditions under which he lived and how they have cared for their breeders to make sure you have had some contact with humans. I have seen first hand a case of a "place" to sell puppies "industrialized" which could have a hundred dogs whose contact with humans had been almost nil.
I know that I still have many things in the pipeline as it is a big topic, but in my personal opinion at the end it comes down to respect nature our canine companion and not try to make it what it is, knowing their character and customs and respect them, and provide a good education to turn him into a balanced adult. Make sure we fulfill this commitment to it must be the result of a considered decision before introducing a dog into our lives.
